I’m learning to just LIVE! And surprisingly, one of the best pieces of advice in learning how to do this is to forget about what other people think. Now before somebody goes off the deep end with this “revelation”, I am NOT saying that you should never care about what others think; that’s foolish. The Bible says a wise man listens to advice; that a fool is right in his own eyes, but the wise listens to counsel; and that plans fail for lack of counsel but with many advisers they succeed. When it comes to making decisions, especially decisions with great consequence, you should definitely consider the thoughts and advice of the influencers in your life. But what I am saying is don’t downplay who YOU are based on the opinions of others. Do YOU! 😉
I have a friend whose boyfriend is the epitome of “I don’t care what people think” and I LOVE IT! We’re talking about the guy who goes to Alive after Five and dances like he can dance on beat (*whispering* he can’t lol) while screaming Bad Boys 2016 (*whispering* umm when did the last Bad Boys album come out because one definitely was not playing at the time). I sincerely love his ability to really just not care what others think… it’s amazing!
Yesterday, my friend and I attended another friend’s baby shower where the dress code was all white. While we adhered to the code, we literally argued about who would go into the store to get the gift bag before the party. Why? Because we had on all white, it’s February, it snowed today, and it’s not the time period between Memorial and Labor Day when white is acceptable. [For those of you who didn’t know there were rules to wearing white lol check them out here: http://womens-fashion.lovetoknow.com/Rules_for_Wearing_White.]
But it felt sooo liberating walking into Target with my white jeans and black winter coat on and not really caring what anyone thought. I was going to celebrate a friend and her beautiful bundle of joy’s arrival. In that moment she’s what mattered and no one should have needed to know the why behind my wearing all white in order for me to feel ok about it. Another revelation: we don’t owe anyone an explanation for living life!
While that’s a really silly example, it shows how we too often allow the thoughts and opinions of others to limit us. Those limitations, while they sometimes seem small, can keep us from reaching our maximum potential. When pursuing your passion, it’s imperative you learn to LIVE your truth. Every individual’s DNA, for all practical purposes, is completely unique. And DNA is the molecule that carries the genetic instructions used in our growth, development, and functioning. That means we all have one of a kind, distinct journeys. None of our journeys will look exactly the same and that’s perfectly fine because that’s the way God intended it.
I’m encouraging you to LIVE to your maximum potential this week and every week that follows!
Dance to the beat of your own drum!
